School closures: Due to severe weather damage in Houston, HISD campuses to be closed on Friday

HISD said all campuses would be closed Friday, May 17, 2024, and would reopen Monday, May 20, 2024.
There were uprooted trees and downed power lines across the city. As of 9 p.m. Thursday, CenterPoint reported nearly 900,000 customers without power. Throughout the afternoon and into the evening Thursday, strong storms set off a slew of tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings across the Houston area.
Katy ISD’s Paetow High School also delayed its graduation ceremony. It was originally scheduled to happen Thursday night but the district moved it to Friday.
